Today is Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Birthday
On this day back in 1987, ‘Star Trek‘ came back to TV in a way that would shape the future of science fiction on television. The Enterprise, an iconic vessel to the stars was revamped, reinvigorated and re-staffed with a crew that would go on to span 7 TV seasons and 4 feature films, ultimately leading to other spin-offs of the original ‘Star Trek‘ series from 1966 in ‘Star Trek: Voyager‘, ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘, and ‘Star Trek: Enterprise‘.
‘Star Trek: The Next Generation‘ took place about 70 or so years after the crew from Captain James T. Kirk & Co. ended their final missions, but similar characters were still around to challenge the ongoing missions of the Enterprise crew, now under command from Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Klingons, Vulcans, and now the Borg (among many others) threaten the prosperity of the crew as they attempt to explore new worlds, seek out life, and boldly continue to go where nobody has gone before.
