‘War of the Worlds’ (2005)

The novel ‘The War of The Worlds’ was written in 1898 by author H.G. Wells and has spanned over a century of incarnations on film, television and radio.  It is the story of a Martian invasion of Earth, with alien “tripods” attacking and destroying everything in their path.  Allusions to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution abound in the story, as the battle for survival of the fittest rages on.

In 2005 Steven Spielberg recruited Tom Cruise to spearhead his vision of the classic story, to much commercial success.  Survival, not fighting, is the focus of this story of a deadbeat dad who tries in vain to keep his children safe from the invasion.  While escaping from his ravaged hometown, Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) takes off with his two kids to try and locate their mother and stay alive in the process.  Along the way death and destruction is seemingly unavoidable as the Martian “tripods” harvest humans.  This modern retelling of human extinction is full of suspense and emotion as the Ferrier family tries to overcome their differences and simply to try exist in a world that may soon be over.

Co-starring Dakota Fanning, Tim Robbins and narrated by Morgan Freeman, ‘War of the Worlds‘ is a blockbuster remake worthy of your attention.  Check out our ‘War of the Worlds’ Sound Quote Collection page to experience the invasion for yourself.  How much would you sacrifice for your family’s survival?
