Holiday Film Spotlight: Elf (2003)
‘Elf’ (2003)
It is really, really difficult to make a holiday-themed film these days and have it become an instant pop culture phenomenon, but Will Ferrell achieved monumental stardom and notoriety with everyone, everywhere, all year-round, when he starred in Jon Favreau‘s 2003 Christmas comedy ‘Elf’.
Ferrell plays Buddy, a human who accidentally ended up at the North Pole as an infant when he snuck into Santa’s gift bag one Christmas as Santa was delivering presents to an orphanage. Adopted as an elf, Buddy was raised to work in the workshop and make toys all year long. His incredibly huge size and clumsy ways have an adverse affect on his popularity, so one year he decides to travel to New York City and seek out his biological father (James Caan) in an attempt to discover his true identity. Along the way, he falls in love with a retail clerk (a blond Zooey Deschanel) and gets into a fight with an “angry elf” in a board room meeting. Obviously, this being a Will Ferrell movie, things do not go smoothly and he gets into even more trouble. Especially since he dresses like an elf, eats nothing but candy & sugar, and has no common sense of normal society at all.
This movie has become a celebrated modern classic, the love that fans have for this film is ginormous. Yes, I said ginormous. Incredibly memorable quotes, insanely awkward moments and hilarious misadventures in the Big Apple are welcome treats to any and all who experience this film.
