Raise your SHIELD’s.
Remember that shadowy government security agency that Sam Jackson ran in THE AVENGERS? Well get ready to be a lot more familiar with it. Disney is working on a S.H.I.E.L.D. centric TV show with Joss Whedon for ABC. Whedon will serve as a producer on the project, not the “showrunner”. That job will not fall far from the family tree though with Whedon’s sister-in-law Maurissa Tancharoen and his brother Jed Whedon running the day to day operations. This isn’t nepotism though, Other Whedon and Tancharoen are seasoned writers in their own right working on DOLLHOUSE and SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND. Joss and Jed are said to be co-writing the pilot script and Whedon told Variety that the show will be “autonomous” from the sequel to THE AVENGERS that Whedon will also be working on.
ROBOCOP Casting News.
While Warner Brothers and DC are rumored to be working on a interesting list
Cumberbatch on ELEMENTARY.
So CBS had this great idea — go take Sherlock Holmes and drop into the modern day as a genius investigator with a touch of quirkiness. Brilliant right? Indeed, except the BBC and Mark Gatiss already had that idea and have been making SHERLOCK to great acclaim across the pond since 2010 with rising star Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead. Well, Cumberbatch was apparently approached by the star of CBS’ Holmes show ELEMENTARY — Johnny Lee Miller — and the SHERLOCK star shared this with The Shortlist:
I did say, ‘Well, I’d prefer you didn’t do it but you’ve got a kid to feed, a nice house in LA and a wife to keep in good clothes.’ When you get used to a certain standard of living and they waft a pay cheque at you, what are you going to do? I think Jonny was like, ‘Mate, I’ve got the f*cking mountain to climb here [to reach the acclaim of Sherlock], you’ve got nothing to fear.’ I wish him the best of luck, but I’m a bit cynical about why they’ve chosen to do it and why they cast him.
ELEMENTARY premieres on CBS on September 27th and until we get more SHERLOCK you can catch up on some of the older episodes on Netflix.
Memory Lane.
Two of the funniest comedians of the last 30 years both seemed to be inching toward returns to television this week with former MORK AND MINDY star Robin Williams and former SNL star Eddie Murphy reportedly linking up with David E. Kelley and Shawn Ryan respectively.
For Williams, it looks like this will be a wholly original project (in as much as a concept can be these days) — a comedy — from the GOOD WILL HUNTING Oscar winner and the creator of ALLY MCBEAL and DOOGIE HOWSER. CBS is apparently interested and while the rumor is that the show might center on an advertising executive and his daughter, nothing is yet set in stone though I’m hoping Kelley makes Williams’ character keep a diary on a DOS based computer.
On the other side, Murphy is working with Ryan (THE SHIELD) on a possible BEVERLY HILLS COP related show that would center on Murphy’s character’s son. Murphy would possibly appear from time to time. No word on a network or what this means for the possible BEVERLY HILLS COP 4 that Murphy was rumored to be working on. Either way, this is probably bad news for that PLUTO NASH sequel that was never going to happen. (Deadline, Huff Po)
